A glove box (glovebox) – also known as an isolator glove box, atmospheric enclosure or an inert gas enclosure – is a sealed work area with built-in glove ports, pass-through chambers, and interlocking doors that provides a controlled environment for manipulating parts or processes without exposure to ambient air.
Gloveboxes create controlled atmosphere conditions that protect sensitive parts and processes from oxidation, moisture contamination, and other environmental influences. These enclosures are critical where even trace levels of moisture or oxygen can impact product quality, reliability, or performance.
Gloveboxes are designed to maintain an internal atmosphere that is very low in oxygen and moisture, often by using inert gases such as argon, nitrogen, or helium to displace ambient air. These atmospheres help preserve parts that are sensitive to oxidation or humidity during processing or assembly.
Many gloveboxes include pass-through chambers (antechambers) that allow materials to be introduced or removed without compromising the internal environment.
Operators interact with the internal work area through glove ports with sealed gloves that are mounted in the enclosure walls, allowing manipulation of parts and tools while still maintaining the controlled environment.
The windows built into many gloveboxes provide clear visibility of internal operations while maintaining a barrier between the operator and the internal atmosphere.
In manufacturing environments — particularly in electronics, aerospace, semiconductor, and other high-precision industries — gloveboxes support processes that require precise environmental control. Examples include:
