Laser Weld Monitoring

What is Laser Weld Monitoring?

Laser weld monitoring is a process used to evaluate laser weld quality by detecting and recording the thermal signal generated at the laser interaction zone in real time. The system produces an output waveform that represents the weld event. Upper and lower control limits can be set around this waveform to define acceptable weld conditions.

During production, the monitor compares each new weld waveform to the established reference limits to determine whether the weld meets defined quality criteria. Laser weld monitors are capable of precision monitoring for both continuous wave (CW) and pulsed laser welding processes.

How Laser Weld Monitoring Works

Laser weld monitors:

  • Detect thermal emissions at the laser-material interaction point
  • Convert the signal into a measurable output waveform
  • Establish control limits based on known good welds
  • Compare real-time weld data against these limits
  • Classify welds as acceptable or out-of-spec

This process occurs in real time, allowing immediate identification of weld variation.

Why Monitor Laser Welding?

Laser weld monitoring systems support process stability and product quality by identifying deviations from established welding norms.

Monitoring enables users to:

  • Identify ideal parameters and control limits for successful laser welding
  • Detect drift or variation in the weld process
  • Provide independent, external process monitoring
  • Collect and record process data for analysis

By tracking weld consistency over time, monitoring systems help maintain repeatable laser welding performance.
