Implantable Medical Devices

A medical device is considered implantable if it is either partly or totally introduced surgically into the human body and is intended to remain there after the procedure. It is estimated that 10% of the American population and 5% to 6% of people in industrialized countries have an implantable medical device of some sort to help rebuild body functions, achieve a better quality of life, or expand longevity. Examples of implantable devices include ICDs, LVADs, pacemakers, auditory implants (cochlear), pacemakers and pumps. They typically consist of a microelectronic system encapsulated in a hermetically sealed canister with electrodes connecting the device to the body part/organ but may also simply be wire mesh or other materials.

Pacemakers

A pacemaker is a small device that utilizes electronic stimulation to help control the heartbeat. Electronics, including batteries, are hermetically sealed in a titanium or titanium alloy case with a metal alloy lead. In keeping with FDA’s UDI compliance, cases are permanently marked with pertinent information about the device including manufacturer name, location, date and serial number.

Brachyseeds

Brachytherapy seeds (brachy seeds) are small metal cans roughly the size of a grain of rice which are filled with a radioactive isotope like palladium, iridium, iodine or cesium, hermetically sealed and either applied on the surface of a tumor or individually implanted into the tumor in a strategic location. The brachy seeds emit radiation and shrink/destroy the tumor over time. Brachy seeds may remain in the body permanently or temporarily. Brachy seeds are typically made of titanium which features low density, high strength and a high level of corrosion resistance.
