Integrated Hermetic Seam Sealing Systems

AMADA WELD TECH designs and manufactures integrated hermetic seam sealing systems for electronic packages and other components that require protection from the ambient environment. Systems can combine resistance welding equipment, precision motion, lid placement and tacking, process controls, tooling, and controlled-atmosphere enclosures into a coordinated manufacturing solution.

Depending on the application, hermetic sealing can be performed using parallel seam sealing, projection welding, or laser welding, with system configurations ranging from stand-alone equipment to fully integrated glovebox systems.

Configuring an Integrated Hermetic Sealing System

Hermetic sealing applications vary according to package design, materials, sealing method, production requirements, and the atmosphere required inside the finished package. AMADA WELD TECH offers standard and custom system configurations that can incorporate:

  • Parallel seam sealing systems
  • Projection welding systems
  • Lid placement and tacking
  • Resistance welding power supplies
  • Laser welding
  • Precision motion and process controls
  • Machine vision
  • Application-specific tooling
  • Gloveboxes and dryboxes
  • Vacuum bakeout ovens and antechambers
  • Gas purification and process gas monitoring

Because AMADA WELD TECH designs and manufactures both the welding equipment and complete hermetic sealing systems, the power supply, motion, software, tooling, and atmospheric controls can be engineered to operate together as a complete process.

Controlled-Atmosphere Hermetic Sealing

Many hermetic sealing processes take place inside a glovebox (aka drybox) to control the atmosphere surrounding the package during sealing. These enclosures can be purged with inert gas and configured with vacuum bakeout ovens, antechambers, gas purification, and monitoring of process gases such as moisture, oxygen, and helium.

Integrating the sealing equipment directly into the controlled-atmosphere enclosure allows package handling, lid placement, tacking, and final sealing to take place without exposing sensitive components to the ambient environment.

Hermetic Sealing Processes

AMADA WELD TECH integrated systems support several methods of hermetic package sealing.

  • Parallel Seam Sealing uses two rotating wheel electrodes to create a series of overlapping resistance welds along the perimeter of a package and lid, forming a continuous hermetic seal.
  • Projection Welding concentrates welding current and force at a designed projection to create the seal. Projection welding systems can be used for applications such as round packages and cap welding.
  • Laser Welding can also be integrated into a glovebox for applications requiring laser-based hermetic sealing in a controlled atmosphere.

From Sealing Process to Complete System

Successful hermetic sealing depends on more than the sealing equipment alone. Package design and fit-up, welding parameters, motion, tooling, atmospheric conditions, and process sequence all contribute to the finished seal.

AMADA WELD TECH provides the equipment and engineering resources to bring these elements together. Systems can range from stand-alone seam sealers and projection welders to automated lid placement, tacking, and seam sealing equipment and complete controlled-atmosphere glovebox systems.

This integrated approach allows the sealing process, equipment, controls, and environmental requirements to be developed as one coordinated manufacturing solution.
