Parallel Seam Sealers

Parallel seam sealing is a resistance welding process used to hermetically seal electronic packages and other components that require protection from the ambient environment. A metal lid or cap is joined to a metal package or to a ceramic package with a metal seal ring, creating an air- and moisture-tight enclosure around the components inside.

How Parallel Seam Sealing Works

Parallel seam sealing uses two rotating wheel electrodes that travel along the perimeter of the package and lid. Controlled electrical current and force are applied through the electrodes, producing a series of overlapping resistance welds that form a continuous hermetic seam.

Consistent seam quality depends on precise control of key process variables, including:

  • Weld current and energy
  • Electrode force
  • Travel speed
  • Weld spot spacing and density
  • Electrode position and motion

Maintaining repeatable control of these parameters helps produce a consistent seal around the package perimeter.
