Electrodes

The welding electrodes play three different roles in resistance welding:

  • Maintaining uniform current density
  • Concentrating current at welding points
  • Maintaining thermal balance during welding

Electrodes are made of a wide variety of conductive and refractory materials depending on the parts to be joined.

The size of the weld will not be larger than the electrode face. So it is important to choose electrodes with the same tip diameter as the desired weld nugget.

Resistance welding electrodes wear as they are used and should be cleaned and dressed regularly; they should be replaced when the tip is damaged or blows out.
