Phonon

A phonon is defined in quantum mechanics as an “elementary vibrational motion in which a lattice of atoms or molecules uniformly oscillates at a single frequency.” In laser welding metals, phonons lead to the breakup of the crystal lattice at the atom level, which eventually leads to melting making the weld possible.
