This method of marking is used primarily for implantable and reusable medical device parts which, in the United States, must bear a UDI code. This dark mark is produced on a stainless steel part and is required to survive the passivation process and repeated autoclaves used for sterilization purposes. Picosecond IR lasers are ideal for this application. Read more in our paper Dark Marking with Picosecond Lasers.
